| Walks in Rome |
|
These are planned according to the client’s wishes, and could be the well-known sights and monuments of the city, Colosseum, St Peter’s, Sistine Chapel and so on for first-time visitors, or slightly off the beaten track for those who already know the city, including catacombs, Christian mosaics, fountains, panoramas of the city, or one of the specialized walks below, or a mixture of all of these. When a prospective client contacts John Fort, he will ask whether the client already knows Rome, has any special interests, how long the client wishes to tour for, whether the client wants to be on foot or prefers a car, and so on. On this basis, he will make suggestions as to how to spend the allotted time, buying tickets in advance or making bookings and arrangements where appropriate. For instance, first-time visitors may want to see the Vatican/Sistine Chapel/St Peter’s which usually takes about 3 hours, or else ancient Rome and the centre of the city, including Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps (also 3 – 4 hours) and perhaps a selection of other beautiful churches and works of art on the way. Those who already know the city may want to go slightly off the beaten track, and this might mean a tour on a Christian theme, with a mixture of catacombs, churches with mosaics and so on, or a tour on a Jewish theme, with a visit to the Ghetto, to the chapel to see the terrifying statue of the pope who set up the Ghetto, and the Arch of Titus, which commemorates the sacking of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, or a general tour taking in as many and varied buildings, monument and works of art as possible, and from as many different period as possible. Or one of the tours mentioned in the Special Interests section. The groups consist only of whoever books the tour, which means that the tours are conducted with maximum flexibility and quite often develop as they proceed. |
